The Desperate Need
Despite the remarkable
spread of Christianity around the world today, spiritual
darkness, cultural and societal decay are reaching
unprecedented levels globally. The world has changed but
on a wide scale the church continues to act as if
nothing has changed.
“There is a widespread
agreement that the Western-driven agenda of the last 50
years to ‘finish the task’ of world evangelization has
tragically missed the mark in its narrow focus only on
conversion. As I have often said, the Great Commission
has become a ‘great commotion’ of proclamation in
virtual disregard of spiritual formation (doing the
business of making disciples) and social transformation
(righteousness and justice)” (Ref: James Engel,
Rebuilding the Kingdom).
There is a desperate need
today for the Church to recapture the Kingdom Mission of
Jesus who said, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good news to the
poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the
prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to
release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the
Lord's favor" (Luke 4:18-19).
This Kingdom Mission does
not see the world as rigidly divided between the sacred
(religious) and the secular (nonreligious) but instead
sees that God is now, through Christ, “reconciling to
Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in
heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the
cross” (Col 1: 20).
It involves seeing the advance of God’s kingdom into the
surrounding culture by not only words of truth but also
relentless acts of mercy and justice through which the
crookedness in society is made straight. This mission
involves much more than merely seeing “souls saved” and
church buildings filled. It involves seeing the
invisible Kingdom of Christ made visible not only in
individual human hearts but also in entire families,
cities and nations.
Real change will only come
if there is a widespread spiritual awakening through
which God’s Kingdom becomes visible in every sphere of
life.
The
Hope of the World
The only true hope for such
a widespread awakening can be found in the One who says,
“I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5). The
good news is that the radical, renewing work of God
manifested in Jesus Christ in the first century, is
continuing today by God’s Holy Spirit through His
Church.
This is why the Church is
the hope of the world. The Church is the only
institution in the world both designed and equipped by
God for the spiritual, cultural and social renewal of
all nations. Jesus said, “I will build My Church and the
gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt
16:18b).
God has ordained that His
Kingdom comes with transformational power into every
sphere of life primarily through the Church.
The
Priority of Church Planting
After Jesus’ ascension to
heaven, one of the key people through whom He built His
Church in the first century was the Apostle Paul. The
focus of Paul’s ministry was not merely on preaching the
gospel to as many people as possible but on planting
churches in every nation. In Acts 14:21-23 we read,
“They preached the good news in that city and won a
large number of disciples … [and then] … Paul and
Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church.”
Paul’s ministries of
evangelism, discipleship, mercy and justice were always
moving toward the ultimate goal of planting new churches
that could continue these kinds of holistic ministries
of word and deed for generations after he was gone. Paul
clearly understood that the primary way God has chosen
to advance His Kingdom purposes is through the Church
(Acts 28:31, Col 1: 9-20).
Missiologist, C. Peter
Wagner writes, “Church Planting is the New Testament way
of extending the gospel. Trace the expansion of the
Church through Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the
uttermost part of the earth and you will see that church
planters led the way”.
The
Need for New Churches on New Ground
Today, there are billions of
people in desperate need of a personal relationship with
God through Jesus Christ. Of these billions, many of
them do not as yet even have a viable church in their
culture that is able to bring to them the life-changing
ministry of the gospel in word and deed.
The
Need for New Churches on Old Ground
But new churches are
desperately needed today not only among the nations
where there are presently no churches but also where
there have been churches for generations. In spite of
the needed focus on church renewal in traditional
Protestant nations around the globe, many of the
churches in these nations (including Europe and the USA)
have been rapidly declining and Christianity has been
losing its influence on the
surrounding culture. Many
immigrants have moved to previously “Christianized”
nations but remain unreached by the gospel.
Even the USA, once assumed
Christianized by many, has now become one of the
largest, most fertile mission fields in the world. Since
1900, when there were 27 churches for every 10,000
people in the U.S., the spread of churches has fallen
behind demographic growth so that there are now only 11
churches for every 10,000 people (Ref: Lost in America,
T. Clegg). A
recent study
revealed in striking detail the potency of new churches
and the urgency of the need for them in the United
States alone.
The Vision
The
vision is to see God glorified and his kingdom come
among all nations through the global advancement of his
church.
We
believe that God has created all things and so all
creation is good. But because of sin all things have
fallen from that original state. But the good news is
that God has begun the work of redemption for all things
through the life, death, resurrection and ascension of
Jesus; and all things are now waiting to be restored by
Him.
Our
vision is to participate in the Holy Spirit’s work of
restoration by seeking to make all things as they should
have been. This vision is not limited to personal
renewal but also includes new forms and structures in
society and culture. Our desire is for GCA to be a
redemptive agent of global shalom. This vision gives
birth to our mission…
The Mission
The
mission is to establish Kingdom Partnerships
through which leaders are equipped to start, grow and
multiply gospel-centered churches among all nations.
A
Gospel-Centered Church focuses its ministry
primarily on three things: 1) evangelism, 2)
discipleship, and 3) societal transformation – sharing a
Kingdom vision for the spiritual, social and cultural
renewal of its region, nation and the world through the
transforming power of the gospel in word and deed…
The Focus of a Gospel-Centered Church:
-
Good News for the Lost (New Record): Evangelism
This means God promises to save from sin’s penalty those
who believe in Christ and consider them as His beloved,
chosen children (election) forever. As Judge, God
promises to accept the sacrificial work of Christ as satisfying
(propitiating) his just wrath against man and consider
man’s sin imputed to Christ and Christ’s perfect righteousness
imputed to man (justification). As Father, God promises to accept
and love those who believe in Christ just as He accepts and loves His
one and only Son (adoption). (Eph 1:4, 2 Cor. 5:21, Gal. 2:16, Col. 1:22, Jn. 1:12, 1 Jn. 3:1)
-
Good News for the Found (New Heart): Spiritual Formation
This means God also promises to save those who believe in Christ from sin’s
domineering power over their lives by freely giving them a new heart (desires)
and a new Spirit (regeneration) to empower them to know God, honor Him and enjoy Him
forever (sanctification). Although you can never be free from sin’s ongoing influence
until heaven, God promises through Christ to deliver you (redemption) from sin’s domineering
power today. (Acts 2:38,39, Ezek. 36:26, John 3:1-16, 16:5-15, Rom. 6:6,7, 2 Cor. 3:18b)
-
Good News for the Community (New World): Societal Transformation
God also promises that one day all of your struggles will be over and he will bring you to your
eternal home--a place where he will wipe away every tear from your eyes and make all things new.
You will be made new in both soul and body and delivered not only from sin’s domineering power but even
its presence. But this new inheritance God promises you is also cosmic. The good news is
that because “Our God reigns” there is a new world coming where all things that are now crooked
in our lives, churches and culture will finally be made straight. God promises that one day all
of creation will be made new as he makes his invisible kingdom visible over every sphere of life.
The Strategy
1. Develop A World-Class Training Curriculum
After many years of training
church planters from more than thirty countries,
representing more than one hundred denominations and
mission agencies, we are convinced that you cannot truly
train a church planter at a conference, workshop or
seminar any more than you can train a pilot to fly by
taking instruction in flight theory (without flying a
plane), or train a surgeon by mastering the theory of
surgery (but never operating).
Instead we believe that the
best way (the only true way) to learn how to plant a
church is: 1) by planting a church 2) under the
oversight of a well-trained leader/coach that is 3)
guiding you through an intentional, holistic church
planter training curriculum on the field—as a way of
life.
With that training paradigm
in mind, GCA has designed and proven a fully-integrated
church planting training curriculum that includes all
the essential components (called a church planting
“ecosystem”) necessary for equipping leaders to start,
grow and multiply gospel-centered churches in their
cities or regions.
This “ecosystem” is being
built upon a solid foundation of integrated:
-
Theology
-
Missiology
-
Renewal Dynamics &
-
Adult Learning Methods.
This training captures the
best elements of the ecumenical spirit, stimulating
intentional collaboration between denominations and
mission agencies in both mono and cross-cultural
contexts. Several denominations and mission agencies now
look solely to GCA to provide their church planter
training. And GCA training can now be taken for fully
accredited masters and doctoral level credit in the
United States and abroad.
2. Mobilize The Best Church Planter Trainers & Coaches
There are presently more
than thirty GCA associate trainers and coaches, from
several denominations and mission agencies (nearly all
of whom are veteran church planters, coaches and church
planting leaders) representing hundreds of years of
collective, in-the-trenches church planting experience.
New trainers and coaches are being added to the GCA team
regularly.
3. Provide The Highest Quality Training & Coaching
a) Assessment Processes
The best church planter
training begins with an accurate assessment of the
greatest needs of: 1) the church planter and 2) the
church plant (if the church is already being planted).
Planting a church requires
gifts, skills and experience that are different from
merely pastoring an established congregation. Both are
challenging ministries and obviously not every pastor is
called to plant a church. Many who thrive in an
established congregation may wither in church planting,
and many who enjoy planting a church are frustrated in
an established one.
Although self-evaluation is
important in understanding one's call, much can be
learned by inviting the objective evaluation of
experienced church planters. The GCA church
planter assessment process includes personal interviews,
teaching modules, evaluation instruments and a final
feedback interview. These processes are used to help
evaluate leaders in the specific competencies normally
needed for church planting.
GCA assessments include not
only assessing the church planter but also assessing the
health of the emerging church plant. A church plant
assessment enables the church planter to understand the
areas of church development that need the most
attention.
b) Training Events
(1) National Training Conferences
GCA national training
conferences consist of two training tracks: 1)
Basic Training and 2) Advanced Training.
Basic Training Track
The GCA core training
curriculum (Basic Training) is taught at the
5-day GCA National Church Planting Conference. This
training conference (normally offered twice a year in
North America) is an inter-denominational training event
designed to equip church planters, coaches and
supervisors to start, grow and multiply healthy,
gospel-centered churches that result in the spiritual,
social and cultural transformation of entire cities and
regions.
Plenary presentations,
peer-group discussions, practical workshops and
leadership forums allow participants to formulate their
own "culturally contextualized" values, mission, and
church planting strategy. The GCA Seven Seasons of
Church Planting (20 modules) are surveyed from
pre-birth to reproduction.
Basic Training topics
include:
-
Clarifying the church planter’s vision
-
Confirming the church planter’s call
-
Determining the church ministry focus
-
Clarifying the church purpose & mission
-
Developing the church values & styles
-
Designing the church strategies & structures
-
Creating the church ministry models & plans
-
Creating & refining a church planting proposal
-
Establishing a core group & launch team
-
Mentoring church ministry lay leaders & staff
-
Developing gospel-centered ministries
-
Leading the church to healthy growth
-
Managing conflict in the emerging church
-
Organizing church finances & administration
-
Making the main thing the main thing
Advanced Training
Workshops
The
Advanced Training Workshops, also offered at the
GCA National Training Conferences and Seminars, build
and expand on the foundations laid in Basic Training
through specialized training and forums designed for
more experienced church planters, coaches, supervisors,
and for alumni of Basic Training. Advanced
Training topics include:
-
Coaching church planters and church leaders
-
Planting churches in the emerging generation
-
Church Planter Spouse forums
-
Raising financial support & church administration
-
Spiritual Formation - Cultivating heart renewal by
grace
-
Preaching Christ-centered messages
-
Creating gospel-centered worship services
-
Starting regional church planting networks
-
Breaking the missional code
-
Restarting a stalled church plant
-
Resolving conflicts Biblically
-
Planting African-American churches
-
Developing ministries of mercy in the city
-
And more…
(2) Regional Training Seminars
Advanced Training
Workshops offered at the GCA training
conferences are designed to create in you a hunger for
the even more in-depth training that GCA makes available
through our one to three day Regional Training
Seminars.
These seminars are led by
GCA trainers who have developed expertise, through years
of practical ministry experience, in certain focused
ministry areas such as worship, prayer, preaching, small
groups, evangelism, mercy, leadership development, etc.
(3) In-Depth Training Courses (Accredited)
Emerging regional and
national leaders in church planting networks need
holistic, in-depth curricular training to be better
equipped for becoming church planting movement leaders.
In partnership with various educational institutions,
GCA offers fully accredited, graduate level (masters &
doctoral) courses in such areas as evangelism, spiritual
formation, church planting, church renewal, missions,
worship, preaching and ministries of mercy and justice.
Since more than ninety
percent of church leaders globally cannot afford to
leave the field to study long-term in an academy, GCA is
committed to providing contextualized, seminary-level
training (including biblical and theological training)
to church planters in networks on the field—whether or
not these leaders want an accredited degree. GCA is
presently working toward a 25-year goal to develop an
entire leadership training curriculum that will be made
available in all the major world languages.
c) Personal Coaching
Good coaching can double or
triple the effectiveness of a church planter. "Coaching
may very well be the single most important ingredient
for success in a new church plant. Everyone needs to
learn from those who have traveled the path of life and
ministry ahead of them-great benefits can be reaped from
their wisdom and experience. Having someone to guide new
church planters along the sometimes difficult path of
ministry can be invaluable" (Logan & Johnston,
Cultivating Church Multiplication Movements).
GCA
trained and certified coaches provide church planters
with personal coaching appointments in a variety of
formats (face-to-face and/or phone appointments)
according to the church planter’s needs. The
frequency of most coaching appointments ranges from
twice monthly to once quarterly. The typical coaching
appointment frequency is 1-2 times monthly for 60-90
minutes per session.
4. Establish Regional Church Planting Networks
Our strategy is not merely
to train and coach individual church planters but also
to serve evangelical denominations and mission agencies
(districts, dioceses, associations, presbyteries, etc.)
by helping them start and strengthen their own regional
Church Planting Networks from which they will
raise up their own church planter trainers and coaches.
A Church Planting
Network is an intentional Kingdom Partnership
between 3 or more church planters and leaders (normally
from the same denomination, agency, etc.) to share a
common vision for advancing God’s Kingdom in their city
and/or region through starting, growing and multiplying
churches and to resource one another to help fulfill
that vision.
Though an intentional,
multi-year process (normally 3 years), GCA helps
denominations and mission agencies start and strengthen
their own regional church planting networks which become
the primary means for their own recruiting, assessing,
training, coaching and multiplying church planters (and
churches) in a region. A healthy, growing, reproducing
church planting network is not only the best way to
advance God’s Kingdom in a region but also the best way
for church planters to be trained.

skills but also on personal character. GCA is strongly
committed to the primacy of character development
(personal godliness) in all our training curriculum.
The 5-Day Training
Conference Surveys the 2-Year Training Curriculum
The GCA five-day training
conference gives you a survey and orientation (a mere
“taste”) of the GCA two-year (20-modules) church planter
training curriculum that is designed to equip coaches
and church planters to do real life “trench training” on
the field in regional church planting networks.
5.
Facilitate Church Planting Alliances & Movements
Facilitating Church
Planting Alliances
Since no single Church
Planting Network has the ability to do Gospel
ministry effectively to all the diverse people in one
city or region, our kingdom strategy is also to help
Church Planting Networks start, strengthen and
partner with other Church Planting Networks (from
other denominations, agencies, etc.) in their cities and
regions—thus forming Church Planting Alliances.
A Church Planting
Alliance is a Kingdom Partnership between
Church Planting Networks to pursue a common
vision for the spiritual, social and cultural
transformation of their city and/or region and to
collaborate with each other to help fulfill that vision.
Commenting on the critical
need for various evangelical churches in a region to
collaborate more for the sake of the Kingdom, Richard
Lovelace writes, “If we tried to run a thousand-acre
farm the way the Christian church runs local mission, we
would harvest only a hundred acres’ worth of crops,
because the fields would be a hodgepodge of independent
plantings and reapings.”
When Church Planting
Networks and Alliances begin to pray fervently (i.e.
Concerts of Prayer) for their region and serve
their region wholeheartedly through gospel ministries of
word and deed, this is normally the means God uses to
create a widespread spiritual awakening we call a
Church Planting Movement.
Praying for Church Planting
Movements
A Church Planting
Movement is a work of God’s Spirit that produces
indigenous, healthy, growing, reproducing churches that
result in the spiritual, social and cultural
transformation of a city and/or region.
A Church Planting
Movement is more than merely evangelism and
discipleship that results in new churches, networks and
alliances. And it’s more than a renewal of pre-existing
churches. Church Planting Movements are spiritual
awakenings that establish, strengthen and advance the
body of Christ in a region through the transforming
power of the gospel in word and deed. The end goal is
not merely renewed individuals and churches but the
renewal of cities and regions under the Lordship of
Christ.
Work Hard Toward the
Goal & Pray Hard for the Desire!
Our strategy is to encourage
church leaders to work hard toward the goal of
establishing healthy, growing Church Planting
Networks and Alliances in their regions and
to pray hard for the desire that through those networks
and alliances God would birth true Church Planting
Movements that would result in the spiritual,
cultural and social transformation of their cities and
regions.
The
values (core convictions) that drive us toward the
accomplishment of this mission include:
The Values
-
God-Centered:
Because we believe that God is the all-wise,
all-powerful, all-loving Creator, Sustainer and
Redeemer of all things through Christ, and that He
is, therefore, supremely worthy of all glory, we
will seek, as our ultimate mission, to exalt the
supremacy of God in all things among all nations for
the joy of all peoples and the honor of His name.
-
Kingdom-Minded:
Because we believe that God’s ultimate purpose
includes the restoration of the entire cosmos and
the creation of a new heaven and a new earth, our
ultimate goal will be not merely planting churches
and raising up worshippers among all nations, but
also the spiritual and cultural transformation of
all nations, thereby making the invisible kingdom
visible over every sphere of life.
-
Church-Focused:
Because we believe that God has ordained that His
kingdom come on earth primarily through His visible
church, and that church planting is, therefore, the
most effective ministry strategy under heaven to
bring about God’s purposes in history, we will focus
our ministry on starting and strengthening
indigenous, healthy, growing, reproducing churches,
that result in church planting movements among all
nations.
-
Gospel-Centered:
Because we believe that the Gospel is the good news
that through Christ the power of God's Kingdom has
entered history to renew the whole world, and that
the Gospel is the only means by which people can be
delivered from both the penalty and power of sin, we
will make the Gospel central in all we do so that
the Gospel of Christ is the underlying motive and
means reflected in all our ministries.
-
Kingdom Partners:
Because we believe that God’s purpose for the
nations can only be accomplished by the whole
Church, our ministry focus is not on starting our
own GCA churches or merely serving one denomination,
mission agency or educational institution, but on
equipping our Kingdom Partners globally to start and
strengthen their own church planting movements with
the aim of trans-denominational, trans-cultural,
trans-generational kingdom impact among all nations.
-
Exceptional
Training:
Because we believe that the training of church
planters is so vital to the advancement of God’s
Kingdom and we are aware of the great dangers and
implications of ineffective training methods, we
will engage the world’s best practitioners,
theologians, missiologists and educators in order to
provide the finest, contextualized church planter
training available today for all the nations.
Contextualized
Training: One Size Does Not Fit All!
GCA
church planter training curriculum has already been
translated from English into Japanese and Korean. The
Chinese (Mandarin) translation project is now in process
and plans are underway to translate this training
material into Spanish, French, Portuguese and other key
global languages.
Because
we believe that the training of church planters is so
vital to the advancement of God’s Kingdom globally, we
are aware of the great dangers that can result from
trying to impose one culturally relevant ministry model
on another diversely different cultural context. Just
because certain church planting methods and models are
effective in one cultural context does not mean they
will (or can) necessarily be effective in another.
So when
the GCA core training material is being taught in North
America, it is presented with a North American cultural
context in mind by GCA trainers from North America. But
when this same GCA core training material is being
taught in Asia (as it has been for more than a decade),
it is translated and taught with an Asian cultural
context in mind by GCA trainers from Asia.
Since
the core GCA training curriculum has been designed to be
“principle-based” you can normally attend almost any GCA
training conference, regardless of the cultural context,
and find the training experience to be very beneficial.
This is why we often have church planters from diversely
different cultures learning from each other’s training
conferences—such as a North American Anglo church
planter learning ways to be more effective planting a
church in the USA at a GCA Church Planting Conference in
Asia or in North America.
Whatever
the cultural context, GCA is committed to engaging the
world’s finest practitioners, theologians, missiologists
and educators in order to provide the best,
contextualized church planter training available today.
GCA:
A Brief History
The
ministry of GCA began in the 1970’s as a young,
struggling urban church planter, Steve Childers began to
share ministry resources that had been helpful to him
with other struggling church planters. What began as
merely a personal ministry to his church planter
friends, soon began to make a positive difference in the
lives and ministries of other church planters, as they
shared Steve’s helpful resources with others.
This led
to a series of invitations in the 1980’s for Steve to
train church planters at various training seminars,
conferences and seminaries in the USA. During this time
Steve was planting his second church. In the early
1990’s he began what became a 13-year process of
training Japanese church planters and English speaking
missionaries in Japan. This experience opened the door
for Steve to train church planters in Korea for several
years. Then his ministry began to expand to other
nations and continents.
Today,
Christian leaders from more than 50 countries,
representing more than 200 denominations, 5 languages and mission
agencies, have benefited from GCA church planter
training. Several denominations and mission agencies now
look solely to GCA to provide their church planter
training. And GCA training can now be taken for both
Masters and Doctoral level credit in the USA and abroad.
GCA:
Our Beliefs
-
God
has spoken in the Scriptures. The Bible is the
inspired Word of God, the only infallible and divine
authority in all matters of faith and life.
-
There is only one God
and He is eternal and self-existing in three persons
(Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
-
God has created the
entire universe out of nothing.
-
God created man in His
image, with great dignity and value, to have
fellowship with God and to glorify and enjoy Him.
-
All mankind participated
in Adam's fall from his original sinless state and
is thus lost in sin.
-
God's gracious plan for
the salvation of His people from all ages included
the giving of His one and only Son, the God-man
Jesus Christ, to serve as their mediator and
all-sufficient Savior.
-
Jesus Christ serves as
prophet, priest and king for His people. As Prophet,
He is God's spokesman, revealing the truth to us. As
Priest, He is our representative, having taken our
sins upon Himself, having offered Himself as a
sacrifice to satisfy divine justice and to reconcile
us to God. As King, He is our Lord, Ruler, and
Defender. He subdues us to Himself, rules and
defends us, and conquers all of His and our enemies.
-
The salvation earned by
Christ is applied to us by the Holy Spirit, who
convinces us of our sin and enables us to receive
Christ by faith alone.
-
God declares those who
trust in Jesus Christ alone to be considered
righteous (justified) in His sight, not for any
merit of their own, but for the merit of Christ,
which is imputed to them and received by faith
alone. Through justification the undeserving sinner
is considered clothed with the perfect righteousness
of Christ.
-
God adopts all those
whom He justifies–receiving them into His own
family, making them joint heirs with Christ and
giving them all the rights, privileges and
responsibilities that had previously been granted
only to the Son.
-
God expects His people
to be growing in Christ-likeness by drawing near to
Jesus Christ in ongoing repentance and faith. God
calls His people to be dying more to sin and living
more for the sake of righteousness, knowing that the
goal of God's salvation is holiness, good works, and
service for the glory of God.
-
At death, God will
receive those who have trusted in Christ into glory
to be with Christ forever, our souls at death, and
our bodies in the final resurrection when Christ
comes again. At death the Christian's soul passes
immediately into the presence of God and the
unbeliever's soul is eternally separated from God
unto condemnation.
-
Jesus Christ will return
to earth, visibly and bodily, at a time when He is
not expected, to consummate history and the eternal
plan of God. God will bring all things to a
consummation at the final Judgment, taking His own
to be with Him forever, and casting all others into
hell forever.
